Week II: June 24-29

Art Immersion Week

Stone Carving with Patrick Stolfo

Because of its shape, color, pattern and hardness, the stone has its own story to tell. Only when I understand this can I remove the non-essentials and begin to liberate the form within. – Tony Angell

In this workshop we will explore and create in stone using chisels, rasps, and polishing abrasives, using mostly alabaster and marble. We will enter into a process of discovery that allows the form to evolve from static rock, to moving surfaces, to expressive shape – whether the results be abstract or figurative. Tools and stone will be provided and are included in the materials fee. No previous experience necessary.

This course will be an inaugural event for the Alkion Center as we inhabit our new spectacular outdoor stone carving pavilion, made possible by a generous anonymous donation.

In every block of marble I see a statue as plain as though it stood before me, shaped and perfect in attitude and action. I have only to hew away the rough walls that imprison the lovely apparition to reveal it to the other eyes as mine see it. – Michelangelo

Painting with Meditation and Interaction with Nature Processes with Martina Angela Müller

Meditation is probably one of the most powerful self and world transformation tools. The benefits of meditation are strengthened if they lead into a painting process where they are allowed to linger much longer and resound in our soul spaces, while finding and founding a new language of artistic expression. Painting is enhanced and informed by meditation, and meditation is extended and intensified by artistic practice.

In this workshop we will work with meditative content as well as going out into nature and inviting living processes of water, earth, ash, rain and wind into our artistic work to bring aspects of the elemental of the atmospheric into the painting process. Instruction and gentle guidance will give structure, but leave enough room for individual exploration. New sources of creativity will be uncovered through this process. No previous experience is necessary and all materials will be provided.
